🏛 Historical Development of Krasen Fortress
The ruins of Krasen Fortress are located approximately 6 km south of Panagyurishte, positioned on a strategic hill in Bulgaria’s Srednogorie region. Archaeological evidence shows that the hill was inhabited long before the fortress itself was built, with traces dating back to the Chalcolithic and Early Iron Age.
During the 4th–5th centuries, a Late Antique settlement emerged along the Luda Yana River. At the foot of the hill, archaeologists uncovered one of the earliest Christian churches in the Balkans, dated to the 4th century. The first fortifications on the hill were constructed in the 6th century, linked to the large-scale defensive building program of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I the Great.

Throughout the Early Byzantine and medieval periods, Krasen developed into one of the most important urban centers in the region. This is evidenced by its impressive fortification system with double defensive walls, numerous towers, dense residential areas, and extensive suburbs outside the main fortress. Archaeological finds include two churches, several necropolises, a large water reservoir, and drainage channels built into the fortress walls.
Peak and Fall of the Fortress
Krasen reached its peak during the 13th–14th centuries, becoming a key medieval stronghold south of the Balkan Mountains. The fortress was permanently reclaimed by the Bulgarian state during the reign of Tsar Asen I or, at the latest, Tsar Kaloyan. For the next two centuries, it served as an important defensive and administrative center controlling large parts of Western Thrace.
The final decades of the 14th century were marked by intense Ottoman raids. Krasen was ultimately captured after fierce resistance, as evidenced by breaches in the walls, extensive destruction, and thick layers of ash left by devastating fires.
One of the most remarkable discoveries at the site is a bronze matrix used for wax seals — a rare artifact typically owned by high-ranking officials. Epigraphic analysis revealed the name of the last governor of Krasen: Raphael, a nobleman closely connected to the Bulgarian capital of Tarnovo. It is believed that he perished during the final battle for the fortress, his personal seal lost near the walls and rediscovered by archaeologists centuries later.
After the end of the 14th century, Krasen was abandoned. The population was likely killed or displaced, and only a small Christian settlement with a modest church survived in the former suburbs until the late 17th century.
