Strelatsgrad Fortress – History, Nature & Adventure near Strelcha

massive stone walls of Strelatsgrad

Strelatsgrad Fortress, also known as Strelchansko Kale, is one of the most impressive yet lesser-known medieval fortresses in Bulgaria’s Srednogorie region. It is located about 3.2 km south of the town of Strelcha, on the right bank of the Strelchanska Luda Yana River, in an area known as Galata.

The fortress stands on a naturally fortified hill surrounded by steep slopes and river bends, making it a strategic defensive site used from Thracian times through the Roman, Byzantine, and medieval Bulgarian periods.

History and fortifications

The fortress has an irregular shape, following the terrain, with maximum dimensions of 150 × 70 meters and a total area of nearly 7.5 hectares.
Today, visitors can see massive stone walls, preserved in places up to 8 meters high, built from river and quarry stones bonded with white mortar – typical of medieval Bulgarian military architecture.

Four defensive towers are clearly identifiable, along with a complex main entrance designed as a “trap gate”, forcing attackers into a narrow corridor under heavy fire.

A defensive wall descends toward the river and ends with a tower-well, an essential structure for water supply during sieges.

From Thracians to the April Uprising

Archaeological evidence shows that Strelatsgrad was founded during the Thracian era and remained in use until the late 14th or early 15th century. In the 6th century, Byzantine Emperor Justinian I expanded an earlier fortification on the site, later reinforced by Bulgarian rulers.

A large unfortified settlement once existed north of the fortress, where archaeologists have discovered weapons, ceramics, coins, marble fragments, and remains of a water supply system.

Local legends say that during the April Uprising of 1876, residents sought refuge within the fortress walls to protect women, children, and valuables.
