Sakardzha Peak – The Forgotten Byzantine Fortress Hidden in Bulgaria’s Mountains

Discovering One of the Least Known Historical Sites in Sredna Gora

Hidden among the forests and rolling ridges of Bulgaria’s Sredna Gora Mountains lies one of the most fascinating and least explored historical sites in the country – the ancient earthwork fortification on Sakardzha Peak.

Located northwest of Panagyurishte, this remarkable site remains largely unknown even among history enthusiasts. While many visitors explore famous Bulgarian landmarks, very few have heard about the massive defensive earthworks that crown Sakardzha Peak.

What makes the site even more intriguing is that its true scale is almost impossible to understand from ground level. Only from the air do the enormous circular embankments reveal themselves, forming one of the most impressive military earthwork systems in the region.

During our guided adventure tours in Sredna Gora, we regularly search for hidden places like Sakardzha Peak – locations where history, nature, and exploration come together far away from crowded tourist destinations.

What Is Sakardzha Peak?

Sakardzha Peak is home to a large medieval earthwork fortification believed to have been constructed during the 5th century AD by the Eastern Roman Empire, commonly known as the Byzantine Empire.

The fortress was part of a wider defensive network built throughout Sredna Gora to protect strategic routes and settlements in the region.

According to information provided by Georgi Abdulov, Director of the Panagyurishte Historical Museum, Sakardzha may have served as a major military camp and one of the largest fortified positions on the Balkan Peninsula during its time.

Some researchers estimate that the site may have been capable of accommodating between 70,000 and 80,000 soldiers, highlighting its strategic importance within the defensive system connected to the Panagyurishte Basin.

Although these estimates continue to be discussed among historians, there is little doubt that Sakardzha was an important military position overlooking the surrounding landscape.

The most distinctive feature of Sakardzha Peak is its system of massive concentric earth embankments.

Rather than stone walls, the defenses consist of large circular earthen ramparts built around the summit. Multiple defensive rings surround the peak, creating a complex fortification system that remains visible more than fifteen centuries later.

When walking across the summit, visitors often struggle to recognize the true nature of the site. The embankments blend naturally into the landscape and appear as gentle ridges covered by grass and vegetation.

Only when viewed from a drone do the fortifications become obvious.

From above, the summit reveals a striking series of circular defensive lines, creating patterns rarely seen elsewhere in Bulgaria. The aerial perspective transforms what appears to be a simple hilltop into an enormous military installation.

This unique characteristic is one of the reasons why Sakardzha remains such a hidden gem.

Why Is So Little Known About Sakardzha?

One of the most surprising aspects of Sakardzha Peak is the lack of available information and imagery.

Despite its historical significance, very few photographs of the earthworks exist online. Even fewer aerial photographs show the complete shape of the fortification.

Most visitors to the region have never heard of Sakardzha, and many local hiking routes pass nearby without mentioning the site’s importance.

For explorers, photographers, drone pilots, and history enthusiasts, this creates a rare opportunity to experience a remarkable historical landmark that remains largely undiscovered.

In an age where nearly every destination has been photographed thousands of times, Sakardzha still feels like a genuine discovery.
