Hidden among the hills of the Srednogorie Mountains near the village of Popintsi lies a little-known archaeological site that carries traces of ancient rituals and beliefs. The Popintsi Thracian Rock Sanctuary is located approximately 1.1 kilometers southeast of the village, on a ridge surrounded by the valleys of two rivers – the Luda Yana River and the Strelchanska Luda Yana River.

The sanctuary is situated on the southernmost part of the ridge, directly above the place where the two rivers meet. The location offers impressive views over the surrounding hills and valleys, making it a natural place for ritual activity and observation of the landscape.

The site consists of a group of rock formations where traces of ancient human activity can still be seen. On the western side of a massive rock formation, remains of construction are visible. Archaeologists believe that a small structure once stood attached to the rock.

Fragments of pottery have been found scattered along the slopes below the sanctuary. Most of the ceramic material dates from the Roman period, but pieces of handmade grey Thracian pottery have also been discovered, indicating that the site was used much earlier.

Researchers believe the sanctuary may have served a nearby settlement located on the northern part of the ridge. Interestingly, at approximately the same elevation on the opposite bank of the Strelchanska Luda Yana River lies the ancient fortress known as Popinsko Kale.

Rock sanctuaries were an important part of Thracian spiritual life. These sacred places were usually carved directly into natural rock formations located on high hills or mountain ridges.

Such sanctuaries often included rock-cut steps, niches, basins and altars carved into the stone. One of the most distinctive elements are the so-called “sharapani” – shallow rock basins believed to have been used for ritual liquids such as wine or oil during ceremonies.

Many Thracian sanctuaries are believed to have been associated with the worship of the Sun God and the Great Mother Goddess. Their elevated locations allowed ancient priests to observe celestial movements, suggesting that some of them also functioned as primitive astronomical observatories.

Famous examples of Thracian rock sanctuaries in Bulgaria include sites such as Belintash, Beglik Tash and Tatul Sanctuary.
